Gas used for cooking, lighting, heating and commercial purposes was manufactured and stored at the Glen Cove Manufactured Gas Plant site beginning around 1905 and continuing until the late-1920’s, after which the facility was demolished in 1929. A Hortonsphere for gas storage remained in use on the site through the 1950’s. It was demolished some time between 1959 and 1966, after which the site was transformed into an electric system substation, which is now owned by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). The by-products of gas production and storage that spilled, leaked, or were disposed on the site are responsible for contamination which is now being addressed through am investigation and remediation process being conducted under the oversight of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation by National Grid. National Grid is responsible for the investigation and remediation of the site because it was operated by a predecessor company at the time the contamination occurred.
This website provides information on Glen Cove former MGP Site, the investigation and remediation project and opportunities for public participation. Updates
December 2024
LIPA commenced its substation expansion project following the completion of Phase 1 of National Grid’s environmental remediation work on the former Manufactured Gas Plant site at the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) substation in Glen Cove. The Phase 1 remediation concluded in June 2011. LIPA’s project has progressed in phases from 2012 through 2016. LIPA completed the final subsurface construction in December 2016.
National Grid completed Phase 2 of the site remediation in 2017. This included the installation of a groundwater treatment system in the northwest corner of the site. The system began treatment in September 2017 following installation of a new electrical service. Following the system start up period, quarterly groundwater monitoring commenced in the first quarter 2018.
The finalized Phase II Remedial Action Work Plan can also be found in the Key Documents/Major Reports section of this website.
This web site will be updated as developments warrant during the quarterly groundwater monitoring to ensure the community is informed of the progress of the remediation. Reports related to the remediation project will be posted to the Key Documents section of the website as they are completed.
